The Witness Group Collects Gifts for Operation Christmas Child for Second Year in a Row
It’s that time of year again! Christmas lists are being written, shopping has begun, and we at The Witness Group are excited to announce that we have partnered with Operation Christmas Child, a Samaritan’s Purse ministry project, for the second year in a row.
If you haven’t heard of?Samaritan’s Purse, it was founded in 1970 by Bob Pierce and is a “nondenominational evangelical Christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world.” Aside from Operation Christmas Child, their numerous ministry projects include international and U. S. crisis and disaster relief, feeding programs, women’s programs, and more to help the impoverished.
Dave Cooke, a resident of Wales, founded?Operation Christmas Child?in 1990 after learning the terrible plight of children at Romanian orphanages. He raised ￡60,000 and sent gift-filled shoeboxes to abandoned Romanian children, then continued to send aid to Romania and other European countries in the years following.
Operation Christmas Child merged with Samaritan’s Purse in 1995. As of 2016, they have collected and sent well over 100 million shoeboxes filled with gifts to needy children in more than 150 countries.
All of our?hotel properties?got together to collect 10 plastic shoebox-sized boxes with gifts for 10-14 year old boys, the demographic that was preselected for us. Plastic boxes are durable enough to be reused for food storage or transporting water. All these boxes were collected during our GM meeting and then brought to our headquarters in Columbus. From there, the boxes were delivered to a local Operation Christmas Child collection point.
If your organization is interested in?participating?in Operation Christmas Child, National Collection Week runs from November 13-20 this year. If you want to wrap the boxes that you donate, the lids and boxes must be wrapped separately in order to pass through customs. Items that can be donated include clothing, toys, school supplies, and crafts. Please visit Samaritan’s Purse’s?website?to see a full list of restricted items that cannot be shipped overseas, including seeds, candy, and war-related toys such as plastic soldiers and toy guns.
We hope you decide to join in this international effort to help children the world over!
